Why did Fort Thüngen survive the dismantling? How did landscape engineer Edouard André convert the former military site into a forest park? Hygienic thinking identified it as an ideal place to recharge one's batteries. Concerts and theatrical performances enlivened a site that was completely redeveloped in 1937, with its ‘Independence Pavilion’ inaugurated in 1939. Identified as a tourist attraction, the site was made accessible to coaches. When the European institutions moved to the Place de l'Europe, the site suffered a new fate. The opening of the MUDAM and the Dräi Eechelen Museum, as well as the redevelopment of the surrounding area, turned the site into an urban park in constant development.
