Genie und Festung. Luxemburger Festungspläne in der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin

From 4 October 2013 to 31 March 2014

Under the cooperation agreement between the National Museum of History and Art (Musée national d'histoire et d'art - MNHA) and the Berlin State Library dated 23 April 2012, the Musée Dräi Eechelen exhibited a selection of 71 original plans of the Fortress. Originally, they were working instruments used by the Prussian Construction Directorate (Direction du Génie prussienne) in Luxembourg.
Restored and digitised for the exhibition, the plans show the development of the Fortress between the 17th and 19th Centuries. As such, they shed light on the construction of fortification works such as forts, sluices and mines, and the functions of different military buildings, such as barracks and hospitals. The film 'Mon père, ingénieur militaire' provided an entertaining introduction. The heart of the exhibition was an interactive database allowing visitors to search all the plans of Luxembourg kept in Berlin. A 3D animation of Fort Rheinsheim illustrated the possibilities for interpreting historical plans in the 21st Century.
