The complexity of identity presented in a setting that is familiar to us all: the home. 'My home is my castle' is the motto of many a Luxembourger. It's a concept they take literally.
The exhibition showed how identities interact in everyday life. The different themes were presented in the different rooms making up this home: the nation in the living room, space in the hall, languages in the kitchen, social milieu in the garage, the body in the bathroom, gender in the bedroom and values in the children's room. The texts and objects were integrated into the furniture and items in this 'home'. Each part featured an interactive element where visitors were invited to answer questions connected to the particular subject. The aim was to make visitors think and ask themselves questions. Each of the rooms encouraged visitors to question their own self-image and the way they see 'others'.
As they passed through the different rooms and combined the various aspects of identity, visitors glimpsed the overall construction taking shape. Yet this construction remains a 'work in progress', as creating an identity for an individual or a group is never finished.
The exhibition was based on the results of a research project by IDENT - Socio-cultural Identities and Identity Politics in Luxembourg (Identités socio-culturelles et politiques identitaires au Luxembourg).
