The CDF is located in the 'Hielepaart' (Hoehl Gate), one of the fortress's ancient gates, dating back to the time of VAUBAN. The building was redeveloped by the Austrians in the 18th century and extended by the Prussians in 1837. Its crenellated wall ran between the Niedergrünewald and Obergrünewald forts, securing the Hoehl ravine.
