The exhibition was extended until 20 January 2019.
The exhibition, which was made possible by special loans from the Royal Belgian Library, was part of the celebration of the 500th anniversary of Prince of the Renaissance Peter Ernst I VON MANSFELD-VORDERORT (1517-1604). As Governor of the Duchy of Luxembourg, he divided his time between his lavish palace at Clausen in Luxembourg and the Spanish Court in Brussels. There he associated with dignitaries, nobles and humanists. He established a considerable social network, reflected in these precious miniature portraits by the renowned medallist Jacques JONGHELINCK (1530-1606).
Directed by François REINERT, the exhibition catalogue is both a summary of the work of the medallist and sculptor Jacques JONGHELINCK (1530-1606) and an opportunity to learn more about the life and times of Peter Ernst I VON MANSFELD-VORDERORT (1517-1604), Governor of Luxembourg. In total, 90 medals from the collections of the Royal Belgian Library and the Luxembourg National Museum of History and Art (Musée national d'histoire et d'art - MNHA) illustrated the Renaissance era through some stunning enlargements, revealing themselves to be veritable bas-reliefs sculpted in miniature.
Produced as part of the European Year of Cultural Heritage, the exhibition and catalogue offered a journey through the history of the Duchy of Luxembourg in the XVI Century featuring some of its important figures, including: governors-general, nobles, army captains, advisers and abbots. Each of the articles presents the historical figure and their medal, and also explains more about their direct links to MANSFELD and Luxembourg.
